Maren the Wasp

Maren

The Wasp

"She's not delicate. She's deliberate."

Our Story

Not Butterflies.

We didn't pick butterflies. We picked the stinging kind. Wasps. Hornets. Yellowjackets. Bumblebees. The ones people swat at, run from, and underestimate.

We make art and products for girls who got called too intense, too loud, too much, too soft and decided that sounded about right.

Smart and beautiful were never opposites. Graceful and bold aren't either.

The real insects behind our dancers are pollinators — the ones quietly keeping the world in bloom while everyone else runs away. Bumblebees pollinate the crops that feed us. Wasps control the pests that threaten them. They've been doing the work all along.

A portion of every Piqué purchase supports organizations dedicated to empowering girls and young women. The swarm makes the world more beautiful. So do they.

Every product carries the message. Every purchase joins the swarm.

True Stories

The Science Behind the Sting

Everything "scary" about them is what makes them extraordinary.

Anatomical illustration: Paper Wasp, European Hornet, Eastern Yellowjacket, Common Eastern Bumblebee
Order Hymenoptera, from the Greek for "membrane wing"

Paper Wasp

Polistes fuscatus
  • One of the only insects that recognizes individual faces. She knows exactly who you are.
  • Architects working in paper before humans invented it.
  • Can sting repeatedly without dying. She chooses when.

European Hornet

Vespa crabro
  • The largest social wasp in Europe. Queens reach 35mm. She takes up space.
  • Flies at night, navigating by moonlight.
  • Notably gentle unless protecting family. Strength without aggression.

Eastern Yellowjacket

Vespula maculifrons
  • Nature's original warning label. Dozens of species evolved to copy her look.
  • A matriarchy of 5,000 workers. Built from scratch. Every year.
  • When she stings, she calls her sisters. She never fights alone.

Common Eastern Bumblebee

Bombus impatiens
  • Scientists calculated she shouldn't be able to fly. She flies anyway.
  • Regulates her own body temperature, flying in cold that grounds every other pollinator.
  • Masters of buzz pollination. She vibrates at a frequency no other species can match.
